Tory eyed the hunky firefighters winding up the hoses. “I can’t believe this happened. What a mess.”

“I can,” Asher said. “Alderman is dangerous and vindictive and plays dirty.”

“For a minute, I suspected that it was you who did this.”

“Huh,” Asher guffawed. “Why would you think that I was an arsonist?”

“Yesterday you said you wanted to get Jerrod and Kairon together and now they’re working together.”

“True, but I would never burn down the salon to get those knuckleheads hooked up. My plan was to gently nudge them in each other’s direction, not” — Asher waved his hands at the charred hole that was once Everlasting — “this.”

“In my defense, you can become really scary when you set your sights on something. This intense look overcomes your entire face, and you get this twitch in your right eye.” Tory visibly shuddered.

Asher touched the area in question, his brows knitted together. “I do not. Granted I can be passionate sometimes but scary?” He shook his head. “Never.”

Tory cocked a hip, his eyebrow hitched. “Whatever you say. Guess I’m the one who’s got it wrong.”

“Yes, you are.”

“But I do find it ironic that in a roundabout way, Alderman has helped you along with the bringing together of Jerrod and Kairon. You have to admit that that is kind of spooky.”

“It goes to show that there is a silver lining to every cloud.”

“Speaking of silver linings, looks who’s coming.” Tory and Asher pulled their gaze from the firefighters to look at Ray and Niko strutting up the street, walking that walk that made them sigh.
